Traveling out of Huhehot, passing
Baotou, driving beyond Linhe and across the Yellow River, there is Mengxi High-tech
Industrial Park after riding along National Highway 110 for 1,070 km and turning
left. Along the Mengxi Avenue shadowed by green trees and bordered by green hedges,
a magnificent building comes into view in the distance. Getting nearer to the building,
visitors just can’t help standing in front of it in admiration and marveling its
novel design and majesty. This is the Temple of Convergence, the landmark building
of Inner Mongolia Mengxi High-tech Group Co. Ltd., the leading enterprise in the
park.
The Temple of Convergence has a foundation
of 50 meters in diameter. Over the lawn on the 9-level circular foundation, four
dark-blue steel sculptures are standing there, firmly. The tallest one is as high
as 18 meters. Right at the center of the temple, there is a steel sundial with cooper
scale on its face as well as a tapered style. The style casts shadow on the sundial
face and accurately traces the path of the sun. Right in front of the foundation
and facing the sundial, there is an escalated China marble stone wall measuring
3 meters in width and 10 meters in length, carved with the molecular structure of
Fullerene C60, a scarlet Chinese letter “Ju” (Converg
ence) and the Inscription of
Convergence. Any Mengxi people can introduce the temple point by point
as if telling you stories of their own. The magnificent deep-blue sculptures on
the temple are associated with hands, sails, fish or waves …, they converge and
form in semicircle as if gathering up momentum of siege, indicating the enterprise’s
firm aspiration to conceive plans and strategies and dominate the market. The Sundial,
a traditional symbol of precision in the ancient civilization of China, stands for
Mengxi’s pursuit after precision, respect to objectivity and advocacy of science.
The C60 molecular structure engraved on the top of the escalated China marble stonewall
compare the high technologies Mengxi relies on to establish itself and carve out
an era to the third allotrope, Fullerene, after diamond and graphite in the carbon
family. The structure resembles the spinning and dynamic football on the field,
signifying the vigorous, driving, aspiring and resolute spirit of Mengxi people.
The giant scarlet “Ju”, implies Mengxi as the cornucopia. Then, there follows the188-letter
Inscription of Convergence. .

The influx of rivers builds up the immensity of sea, the mountains standing close
give eminence to peaks, green plants and trees are massing luxuriance of the forest,
sky gathering stars gives prominence to the infinity of the universe. All things
in the universe are converged by different kinds. When things of a kind converge,
it builds a momentum. When the momentum is formed, success is bound to come. The

Ever since Mengxi was founded ten years ago, there have
been numerous examples of how Mengxi makes decisions under social responsibility.
There is no need to mention the tax in tens of millions of yuans Mengxi paid, how
a barren desert be turned into an affluent garden with greens spreading across the
area, highways stretching to all directions and buildings and factories towering
on this land, how Mengxi gives environmental protection the highest priority over
enterprise construction and development, how to build a circular economy to maximally
save resources… Here one single example of high-tech project that was risky but
beneficial to human civilization Mengxi undertook is enough to show how Mengxi makes
decisions with a high sense of social responsibility -----—
International environmental protection organizations in
recent years have been warning that the annual total of carbon dioxide generated
by industries around the world has reached 24 billion tons, 15 billion tons of which
could be absorbed by plants and the rest 9 billion tons are greatly increasing the
carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and aggravating greenhouse effect
as well as global climate. The industrialization process is speeding up the trend.
On the other hand, the wide use of disposable and nondegradable
foam materials and packaging materials is known as the “White Pollution”, one of
the gravest pollution sources. The called “degradable plastic” in the industry is
in fact partially degradable material, i.e. though foam and packaging materials
may not be visible after degradation, their chemical components still exist in the
environment. So the potential risks of environmental pollution have not been eradicated
at all.
Facing environmental crisis resulting from by these two
sources, the need to research carbon dioxide based fully degradable plastic materials
becomes necessary, which not only can put carbon dioxide waste that is emitted excessively
to use, but also can be fully degradable and pollution-free. Such materials are
environmentally friendly and can address two problems with one solution. The benefits
they will bring to human beings are unimaginable. At present, this research theme
that draws much attention from the science and technology field around the world
stayed in laboratory research phase for many research institutions in China and
abroad. To commercialize such a technology requires sound research results as well
as large amounts of investment. There are numerous difficulties to be overcome and
great risks to undertake!
In the face of the enormous challenge, who are the people
standing firmly with great courage and undertaking the arduous mission? Mengxi people
took it with strides.
Starting from November in 2000, Mengxi Group has been
making investment to build pilot plant test lines and working with Changchun Institute
of Applied Chemistry under Chinese Academy of Sciences on research of such a material
with an aim to make progress and build a commercialization demonstration line. For
four years, Mengxi exerted great efforts and its people overcame countless challenges,.
It is hard to elaborate what have been cost to achieve the goal, but now, “Carbon
Dioxide Fixation and Application” listed by State Ministry of Science and Technology
as Knowledge Innovation Engineering Guiding Project had been accepted by state institutions
on the pilot plant testing lines in Mengxi. Later, the first industrial production
line of carbon dioxide-based fully-degradable plastic was built in Mengxi, marking
the group’s leading position in the field around the world. The new material produced
by Mengxi has been exported to enterprises specialized in fully-degradable plastic
processing in the United States, Japan and several domestic companies. Disposable
medical plastic products, dinning wares as well as other products such as golf tees,
are produced with the material and their degradation rates are also controllable
in accordance with different purposes. Commercialization of this project builds
an example of new circular economy.
From the perspective of benefiting the society, Mengxi
made tremendous contribution with this project, but the economic benefits of the
project actually didn’t make up for what it cost. However, Mengxi people never regret
about undertaking the project and still persistently make attempts to overcome more
challenges to improve and perfect the material. The day of great benefits to both
mankind and the enterprise will come at last as Mengxi sincerely believes!
——Mengxi Culture is a human-oriented culture. In the garden-like
factory site, there is a striking billboard, saying “Talents are the core drive
for enterprise development.” The Inscription of Convergence carved on the landmark
construction “To converge talents as its root” also clearly expresses the people-foremost
cultural ideology.
From the day Mengxi was founded, human resource management
was placed at the center of enterprise management and recruitment of talents was
given top priority. Mengxi initiated the program to introduce talents through contract-based
management, turning Talent Ownership to Talent Utilization. The change of one word
resolved the long-lasting problem of talent shortage in less developed areas.
At present, there are ten accomplished Chinese and foreign
experts who are recruited as Mengxi’s special researchers. Mengxi also undertook
over 50 research theme biddings in China Academy of Sciences, China Academy of Building
Materials, Tianjing University and Shanghai University of Sciences and Technology
and gathers over 60 top talents in China through contract-based arrangement. There
are far more professionals who are not working in Mengxi but still making contributions
to the enterprise.
Where there is a will, there is a way. Quite different
from the situation in other places short of talents and competitive enterprises,
a group of top science and management talents regardless of toughness out there
in Northwest China gathered in Mengxi, settled in Mengxi and dedicated all their
efforts to Mengxi as its with one common aim to achieve great success. Among them,
there are the former president of China Academy of Building Materials who quitted
the public service, doctors who used to serve in Mengxi Postdoctoral Research Center
and later decided to join Mengxi ………
Besides the stage Mengxi builds to gather talents from
all domains, it also weaves a net that reaches talents across China and around the
world. By “gather top talents from all walks of life and build a stage to fulfill
themselves” and a wonderful surprise of “ideal habitat in Northwest China for talents

The convergence of talents results in a group of staff
consisting of advanced managers, highly skilled technology professionals and high-quality
front-end employees. Then with the maxim of “Minds be aligned to the same common
objective and to build up morale”, Mengxi inspires this team with its extraordinary
corporate culture and makes it a team that can “strive among mountains and in seas,
through winds and storms, scale peaks that resemble numerous blades pointing at

There was a young employee who worked in frontline workshop
of Mengxi Hig-tech Co. Ltd. for as long as ten years. He was originally graduated
from high school, later took a major related to his work and studied all the way
to vocational college. Every year, he always could come up with new ideas and make
new contributions to improve equipment. The equipment components reformed by him
enjoyed higher efficiency and better life span several times longer than before.
Even equipment manufacturers found it hard to believe the achievement he made. Not
to mention the greatly reduced labor intensity of frontline workers and improved
production conditions, the direct economic benefits from his improvement work added
up to several million yuans. His name is Lu Jianhua. Though a simple, honest, less
expressive man he is, when visitors came to see all the equipment, he even could
manage to say:” take a look at our equipment, they are the best of the best.” It
is like that he was praising his children rather than the equipment. Instead of
feeling that he was showing off or not modest, people were touched by the pride
and the sense of ownership he developed over years of dedication.
There is another young employee who was endowed with musical
talents, adept at saxophone and could sing touching songs like a tenorist. One of
his classmates wanted to invite him to join him in South China and start a career
in the entertainment industry with promises of making a great fortune, which was
a quite tempting offer for a young man who was born in a poor family. But he simply
refused it and said:”My career is in Mengxi. I chose my goal and will follow it.
Honor permits no turning back. I will share weal and woe with Mengxi.” With only
vocational school education, he studied hard and laid a sound foundation for his
work. While testing and adjusting advanced equipment Kaolin Power Co. Ltd. imported,
he joined his colleagues and made great efforts to overcome all the technological
challenges. This guaranteed the successful ignition of kilns and smooth operation
and production. It was during the hottest days in summer when they were pushing
through the toughest parts. For over two months, he had been sleeping down and grabbing
a bite now and then in the field. Only for two nights, he went back to his dormitory,
had a little rest and then headed back to workshops. When oil return rate of the
equipment was adjusted to the level he conceived, when people were all cheering
about the good news on the site, he fell asleep in a corner after working for ten
hours straight, too tired to be awakened by loud gaiety around him. His name Lu
Zizun, who has been an exception and promoted to Process Engineer because of his
knowledge and achievement. This respected young worker is suffered suffer lumbar
intervertebral disc herniation and hospitalized right at the moment. Everyone in
the company is concerned with his health.
They are the examples of loyal and diligent Mengxi people,
cultivated by the people-oriented Mengxi Culture. In Mengxi. There are so many average
workers, technicians and managers who have been entitled as.
Mengxi people, fitted with brand-new views, contemporary
spirits and science and technologies, are putting their creativity into full play.
In the past decade, they overcame all difficulties and opened up Mengxi’s today
with their top performance. Mengxi now already has 15 holding and share-holding
companies with total assets of RMB 2.26 billion, expanding from the cement industry
into new materials, real estate development, construction and engineering, logistics,
research and development as well as real estate management. The initial layout of
new material industry has been constructed, led by four major series of products,
nano materials, polymer materials, non-organic & non-metallic materials and
compound materials, making Mengxi one of the 20 large-scale enterprises (groups)
that are regarded as key subjects of cultivation and development in Inner Mongolia.

When Mengxi was first founded, it employed advanced technologies
to reform the traditional industry of cement and swiftly brought the brand Mengxi
to market successfully out of nowhere. The move to first introduce INFI-90 Distributed
Control System from the United States and fully automate control of cement production
alone helped reduce labor from over 3,000 workers to around 600, equivalent to just
one fourth of average workforce in an enterprise of the similar scale and saving
up to RMB 10 million.
In the past ten years, Mengxi’s experts undertook 152
research projects of industrialized and laboratory scale, accomplished 18 technology
research achievement appraisals in the autonomous region and won 4 local Technology
Advancement Awards, with 43 patents approved, on 3 of which were conferred State
Patent Awards for their outstanding economic benefits. Not to mention that there
are also over two dozen of high-tech projects that Mengxi solely owns their intellectual
property rights.
Today in Mengxi Group, there are 1 major high-tech enterprise
listed in State Torch Plan and 4 high-tech enterprises appointed by the autonomous

It is hard to imagine that Mengxi Group located in a remote
and poorly-developed region and founded merely ten years ago could be appointed
to undertake 9 major state high-tech projects. Here is one of the projects.
Mengxi was listed in West China New Material Technology
Action Plan with its 863 research theme, Co-production of Aluminum Oxide and Cement
Clinker by Industrial Waste Fly Ash Extraction Project. The research theme relies
on the rich coal resources around Mengxi. It first uses low grade coal and gangue
to generate power and extract aluminum oxide from fly ash (with an aluminum oxide
concentration over 40%), the waste residue left behind from the power generation
process. The waste calcium and silicon residues from the aluminum oxide extraction
are used to produce cement clinker. The carbon dioxide recovered from kiln tail
waste gas in rotary cement kilns is densified and puts to use in thorough carbon
decomposition process for scrap aluminum hydrate. This project not only opens up
a new way to comprehensively utilize fly ash, but also forms a circular industrial
chain with low cost, zero emission and no pollution. Currently, all technologies
in pilot study and commercialized have passed technology achievement appraisals
of the autonomous region and two of them has been submitted for state patent of
invention. The 400,000-ton-per-year Aluminum Oxide (Extraction from Fly Ash) Project
has been reported to State Development and Reform Commission and passed project
demonstration of China International Engineering Consultants Company. Now the project
is being fully implemented as planned and some research tasks have achieved technological
breakthroughs and made progressive achievements.
Not long ago, the West China New Material Technological
Action Work Seminar was hosted by State Ministry of Science and Technology and held
in Mengxi Group. Leaders from the ministry, experts in the field of new material
across the country as well as professionals from science and technology departments
and new material enterprises in 12 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions
attended the seminar and highly praised Mengxi’s achievement in new materials. During
the sessions, one well renowned authority said so from the bottom of his heart:
“Back to the time when it was founded, Mengxi explored
and followed a new road that coincides with the view on scientific development and
showed valuable forward- looking awareness and the spirit of innovation, when circular
economy had not been accepted by most enterprises as a new economic form.”
These are all selected aspects of Mengxi Culture, which are far from covering everything
we have in Mengxi Culture, but these outstanding merits are enough to let us recognize
its uniqueness.
Reading the inscriptions on the Temple of Convergence
after the overview of Mengxi Culture, I cannot help feeling my emotion and passion
surging inside me. The “Convergence” means so much! It is the convergence of sincere
Mengxi people, of abiding faith, of the spirit of aspiration, of brand-new views,
of pragmatic practices, and of scientific power. When the momentum is formed, success
is bound to come. Mengxi’s further success and more promising future are foreseeable
and will arrive in the days to come.
Sincerely hope there will be more corporate cultures like
that of Mengxi blossoming in the splendid garden of building Inner Mongolia into
an ethical cultural region!
